Welcome to my blog describing my adventures to, from, and in Kenya.
Day 1 – Morale is high, food rations are sufficient, food stores are high, but European cash is low. I write this from Schipol, the Amsterdam airport. My flight from Chicago was less than exciting, but it was a nice change to leave on time and arrive a little early. I had a little bit of a hassle getting to the correct terminal in O’Hare, but on the bright side, I now know the airport much better. Probably the most exciting thing was the fact that I actually slept for a few hours! (like I said, not a very exciting flight)Wait, I take that back! At 5 pm, the crew gave an announcement that due to the 7-hour time difference it was now the next day in the Netherlands, meaning it was the birthday of a (now) 8-year old boy on the plane. They gave us his seat number and then the stewardesses proceeded to sing a Dutch version of “Happy Birthday.” I was a little jealous….
Yesterday, I was a little amazed that I was able to fit everything in only 2 checked bags both weighing under the 50-lb limit. (I’m bringing a bunch of lab supplies for the research project.) I’m a little worried that one of my suitcases may not be able to handle the stresses I have imposed on it, but I didn’t really have another option…Overall, the only thing I’m really nervous about at this point is whether or not my baggage will be in the right place, if my bags will be in one piece, and if I’ll have any issues with customs due to carrying all of these lab supplies into the country.
I’m not exactly sure what my internet speed will be in Kenya, but if you feel the urge to go beyond the typical facebook/email I can give you my Skype username and/or a Google voice number that will route to my computer. I’ll try to update this every day or two since I think I’ll have sufficient time most evenings…or at least that’s what I think right now. If there’s anything specific you want to know about, don’t hesitate to let me know.
